On a $30 sale with free shipping, a US seller pays Etsy $3.30 in standard fees and receives $26.70, before paying for the item and the shipping label. If the order came from an Offsite Ad, Etsy takes another $4.50. This guide shows every fee, what it is charged on, and how to turn the total into profit.
| Fee | Rate (US seller) | What it is charged on |
|---|---|---|
| Listing fee | $0.20 per listing | A listing lasts four months. Renewing it, including when an item sells, costs $0.20 again. |
| Transaction fee | 6.5% | Item price, shipping you charge and gift wrapping. For US sellers, sales tax is not included. |
| Payment processing | 3% + $0.25 per order | The full sale price, including shipping and any sales tax. |
| Currency conversion | 2.5% | Sales where your listing currency differs from your payment account currency. |
| Offsite Ads | 15%, or 12% after $10,000 in sales within any 365 days; max $100 per order | Only orders from an ad the buyer clicked within the previous 30 days. Optional below the threshold. |
| Regulatory Operating Fee | Varies by country | Sellers in certain countries only. Check Etsy's help center for yours. |
A US seller sells a $30 item with free shipping. The item and packaging cost $7.00 and the shipping label costs $4.80.
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Buyer pays | $30.00 |
| Listing fee | −$0.20 |
| Transaction fee (6.5% of $30) | −$1.95 |
| Payment processing (3% of $30 + $0.25) | −$1.15 |
| Etsy pays out | $26.70 |
| Materials and packaging | −$7.00 |
| Shipping label | −$4.80 |
| Your profit | $14.90 |
That is a 50% margin. Etsy's standard fees on this sale are $3.30, or 11% of the price.
Not in the way most sellers expect. Etsy's transaction fee covers shipping and gift wrap, and payment processing is charged on the total the buyer pays. A $25 item with $5 shipping is a $30 sale, so the fees are the same $3.30 as in the free-shipping example. Free shipping does not remove those fees. It only moves them inside your price.
If a buyer clicked one of Etsy's off-platform ads and bought within 30 days, Etsy charges an extra 15% of the sale. On the $30 sale with no shipping charged, that is $4.50. Your profit drops from $14.90 to $10.40, and the margin from 50% to 35%. Same product, same buyer, a third less profit. Shops that have never reached $10,000 in sales within any 365 days can opt out; larger shops pay 12% and cannot. We cover the details in Etsy Offsite Ads: how the fee works and whether you can opt out.
Etsy's fees only describe what Etsy takes. Profit is what is left after your own costs: materials, packaging, the shipping label, and your time. A product that looks fine at a 50% margin can fall under 20% once an ad fee, a refund or an unlucky shipping rate is added. That is why it is worth calculating profit per order instead of looking at revenue.
According to Etsy's help pages, the transaction and payment processing fees are credited back when you refund through Etsy. The listing fee is credited only if you also cancel the order.
For US sellers, the transaction fee does not include sales tax, but payment processing is taken from the total, including shipping and any sales tax.
Only if your shop has never reached $10,000 in sales within any 365 days. After that, participation is required.
